David Knowles was a very talented broadcaster who developed the podcast Ukraine: The Latest from a Twitter feed with Dom Nicholls at the start of Russia’s hostilities in Ukraine on 24 February 2022.
The podcast matured quickly and amassed an audience in the hundreds of thousands around the world, becoming so authorative and engaging that it won the award for Best News Podcast in UK for 2024.
His tragic, sudden passing in Gibralter in September at 32 has left his colleagues and audience shocked, bewildered, heart-broken. Streaming live from St Bride’s Church in Fleet Street, London – the journalists’ church, a moving memorial service for him spoke of the extraordinary depth and diversity of his talents and accomplishments.
Listening to “the pod” every day I loved his gentleness, his courtesy, his enthusiasm, his humbleness, his humanity.
David’s passing leaves a terrible hole in so many lives, but I’m heartened beyond measure by his colleagues’ determination to continue the remarkable work he began. Rest well David.
